Competition Team Tryouts

Tryouts for the competition team are hosted on one of the first Fridays of every semester. They take place in our usual room MP 1/2 at the RecWell. Fall 2025 Tryouts will take place on September 12, 2025, at 7 PM.

Tryouts Format

First, you will check-in and fill out a Google form at our table. Once the forms are complete, you will choose a number (for Follows) or a letter (for Leads) to pin on the back of your shirt.

Tryouts are similar to regular weekly lessons. The competition team coaches will teach the basics of 2 types of dance. They will teach Waltz and Cha Cha in the Fall and Tango and Rumba in the Spring. Partners will rotate throughout the lessons, so there is no need to bring a one.

Qualification

Qualification for the team does not depend on skill or experience. Instead, the club’s officers are looking for an enjoyment of dancing, a willingness to learn, and a friendly attitude!

FAQs

Do I need to have dance experience to tryout?

No! Qualification for the team depends on how much you enjoy dancing!

What clothes should I wear? Do I need dance shoes?

Any clothes that you can move in will work fine. If you don’t own dance shoes, you can use socks, go barefoot, or use shoes that will not leave scuff marks on the floor.

When will I know if I made the team?

Results will be sent out on the Sunday after tryouts.

Are there others ways than the competition team to get more involved in dance?

Yes! Rookie/Vet – sometimes called Mixed Proficiency – is a great way to learn more about dance without being on the competition team.
